Scott Davis Have been following Marcus since he played Faz's Garage in 1996. This album has a great listenability to it. The lyrics are intelligent whilst being mysterious. The songs are pop like (in a good way, think Human League pop, not Brittany pop) that makes them accessible but interesting and unique. Highly recommend that you put your hard earned cash into this audio delight. Favorite track: We Can Have A House.

I, Lummox 04:40
I never saw the workers come in but all the work’s done I never saw the buildings rise up but all the dirt’s gone I think I heard the Tin Man’s tin fingertips on the nightstand and when I woke, a puff of smoke and a heart in a jar with a note, ‘Dear Scarecrow’.I don’t know why I can’t think, feel so loose when you’re with me Cautious though. So let’s meet at the electric fence, get some toes wet. One day we will say our finest words accidentally. Disappear in the twister, come back brave, convinced of a brain for tickling. One day we will say our finest words accidentally. Text back from the séance with the good gossip from the flipside of the light switch. Her little heart in a vestibule grew from nothing into a lion’s tooth. Her blonde mane sits fluffing ‘til the pitter patter of bloody claws come running. I require this give and take. The longs drives with the light ache. Where I dream of your use, said the orange to the duck, the lass to the lummox. One day we will say our finest words accidentally. Disappear in the twister come back brave convinced of a brain for tickling. One day we will say our finest words accidentally. Idiot’s on the swing-set talking ‘bout love, numb to the thump of wondering.

Good Machine 04:01
first time in my haunted new town unscrewed the cloud from my back and let the thing float 'round I watched your avatar talk and report from some flat future of course we used to do it too but that was before I knew it we once gathered in the great carparks of our time thinking if the smart ones manage the savages things should all work out fine did your second life kick while we were at the sink? 'cause while the radio played I was feeling nearly nothing somewhere... a room of babies astral-travelling next to ones of adults tracking them in the heart of a good machine runs a search for unused memory seeing everything all at once like the villagers should have done shook a fist at the unbuilt plain ‘yeah I will come for you again' was it ever going to be this hard? you can say it now without love the time we met before we met you were going to be the one.

lost the scent in the fur of your neck picked it up again at drinks on the deck I wondered how our spirits get out ‘til I saw our skins hanging in the marquee load the bricks through the hole in the lawn scatter ash out silver salad bowls do you think the path of the hero was lit by a phone on a stick flickering or moon on our lips? first got stuck in the pace of the time second one ran out underneath the tyres and the third one listened to everybody else and the fourth got bored only liking love singing... we never thought about it much I remember now did you use your whole heart? for a little while and if the treasure isn’t seen? the shovel works the monument was nothing to believe we can have a house that’s bigger than we need I can see the woods if we turn out the light people saving up, wonder what it means? something between them and the outside you can choose the colours, I can trap the meat you say the things that only I can think people holding hands, wonder what it means? something between them and the outside now that no one is listening we pause at the sight of the scene our theme she lifted up her drink and said, ‘this must be the place in the dream, but I guess I’m already there and now there’s nothin’ next’ singing... we never thought about it much I remember this did you use your whole heart? was there more to it? and if the treasure isn’t seen? then we’ll keep the tape we make mistakes for authenticity now I know all the towers rising through the trees ‘we can see you’ they say ‘always seeing we, and we’ll always be here reminiscing about your body missing about you bodies missing' we can have a house that’s bigger than we need I can see the woods if we turn out the light people saving up, wonder what it means? something between them and the outside you can choose the colours I can trap the meat you say the things that only I can think people holding hands wonder what it means? something between them and the outside

walked into the evening light nothing was wrong, little was right but I cheered you on that night and I don’t know if you want very much anymore except to click your heels in flight got talked into the early night it wasn’t dark, not yet light but with a vision I could see it alright and you deserve to become something, or someone difficult to you or I standing there with your tongue undone folding your hands always on it, from the side I fell in love I give it up, what we’ve done if you want it, this one is sunk when the pavilion lights come on oh honey it’s what you make it it’s how we take it out of the smoke my rifle on said something slow think I can stretch out into the unknown I watch them watching you unwind your net I lash my head onto my neck I never promised nothing or besides you’re always listening whenever I’m quiet I’m onside with a celestial slight feel like I’m looking at you for the first time feel like I’m... oh honey it’s what you make it it’s how you take it it’s how you...

I was a modern dreamer she bright but conservative I know it now I made enough to see her she made enough to live I know it now I wanted to be anywhere but here just need to find where that is made love and sound investments but in the lift one night I know it now she said, ‘feel bound by a common logic footloose and otherwise’ I know it now 'I wanted to feel something more obscene I mean sometimes I wake up already bored with my dreams' always you’re so certain that it’s always working that someone is somewhere plucking on the strings hooked into your heart so we covered the car up with branches stripped off set fire to the fences stole the streets with the moon as our compass discovered stars were always above us I saw your face when we stopped at a stream it seemed lit but not from the TV this one was ours I know it now always you’re so certain, that it’s always working that someone is somewhere plucking on the strings hooked into your heart stripped of stories plain and performing its naked ancient function naive possessed of nothing

Swish Cape 03:25
I explode back into your room turn it upside down for clues don’t leave until it’s safe with a swish of the cape sweep you up in my arms lay you out in the cool yard underneath the stars of wherever you probably are explode back into your room and I turn it upside down for clues and I don’t leave until it’s all safe with a swish of the cape go out just to get to sleep like it’s all I can think to do with me when the figure you cut keeps cutting out slide on the tights Xs for eyes on nights when the moon is high we’ll get the car and drive cities might rust but for you I swear I’ll always dress up keep crashing through your door even though they’re both not there no more I can set forth anytime I like one day maybe I might explode back into your room and I turn it upside down for clues and I don’t leave until it’s all safe with a swish of the cape go out just to get to you like it’s all I can ever think to do when the figure you cut keeps cutting out slide on the tights Xs for eyes

I was a hunter gatherer and now I just gather still hunt dumb stuff I want when I’m done the dirt when it’s won says ‘I was a hunter gatherer now I just hunt’ I set forth on an uncollected thought couldn’t find the heart for thinking hard anymore I traced my crumbs from pond to the car sweet postcode to cruise and watch evolution slow I was a hunter gatherer and now I just gather still hunt dumb stuff I want when I’m done the dirt when it’s won says ‘I was a hunter gatherer now I just hunt’ left for dead the pixel in my head ones that I used for everything I knew of common sense, access to the nest the one where the kids tear strips of the bones walking in I was a hunter gatherer and now I just gather still hunt dumb stuff I want when I’m done the dirt when it’s won says ‘I was a hunter gatherer now I just hunt’ I’ll forgive you anything if you forgive me anything

Unlucky Soul 02:57
where do you belong then? if not to us then to who now? did you ever wonder? or see underwater one time? a milky soul is somewhere a spark in the dark still needs a start just turn the lights to black let me see what it’s like this not coming back unlucky soul sink below the address follow the sound of skeleton keys dancing in the pockets singing out for doors we can’t see need to feel nothing new it’s not a thing of habit it’s to make certain this rare thing we know just happened unlucky soul

Am I Dead 05:32
and when you woke you looked at me and said ‘am I dead or almost home? feel like I’m being carried from the car to my bed’ I said yeah you’re flickering your eyes I just think you’re full of life if I wake up older I can wonder if you’re not right and your legs are all crazy I have to stay awake a while watch them shake and it makes me smile to think they think they’re alive when we’re just lying in state on our backs with our arms out straight waiting for something to take in or be taken we don’t remember what we were thinking maybe there was nothing to think about try to get better at believing in all the mystery we tell ourselves

about

Near Myth are a reductive four-piece from Melbourne who make smart songs about being dumb.

Debut release, Idiot Mystic, was recorded and produced by Near Myth/Joe Hammond and mastered by Mikey Young. The album is out on limited edition 180gm vinyl and through your usual digital outlets.

"The meticulously confident sound of a band who have taken their time arranging the pieces into a pattern they know will work – almost too well.” - Sydney Morning Herald

When retrenched editor and songwriter Marcus Teague (Single Twin, Deloris) had a content-related breakdown, he turned to two hard drives - Joe Hammond, who won a recording studio in a magazine competition, and Ben Gook, a Doctor of Social Theory and Cultural Studies specialising in the German Democratic Republic. They spent some of five years writing and recording and re-recording music until it was all pretty much memorised.

"Near Myth have that same curious spirit embodied by the likes of Devo and Hot Chip - that outside-looking-in, that minimal blur of new and old, that exacting sense of being human.” - 4ZZZ

Near Myth do everything they can to avoid each other. If some drums are happening, not much bass. Two guitars? Forget it: synth. ‘I, Lummox’ is about being groomed for idiocy and the Tin Man. ‘We Can Have A House’ is about burying bricks in the yard and torching people with phones. ‘Am I Dead’ is about wondering if you’re dead. Pretty basic.

“An impressive debut by a band that already know their sound. They’ve created an excellent piece of music.” - Super World Indie Tunes
